The criminal justice system is confusing for those who do not spend every day in court and for those not schooled in the law. If you represent yourself in court or you have problems with your lawyer, you may face legal consequences that were unexpected or you see to be wrong. If you believe you have been wrongly convicted or your sentence is too harsh, we can help you argue an appeal. We are the criminal defence lawyers of Donald J. McKay Law Corporation, and we represent clients during:
- Summary conviction appeals
- Indictable appeals
- Criminal appeals to the Supreme Court of Canada
In addition to helping clients reduce or avoid sentences and convictions, we help clients to obtain bail while an appeal is pending.
Appeals Must Be Filed Quickly
In general, convicted persons have no more than 30 days to appeal their convictions or sentences after they have come down from the court. Since time is so important, you should contact a lawyer as soon as possible to get the process underway. Our initial consultation is free, and our fees for your criminal appeal will be up front and fair.
During an initial consultation, we can advise you as to whether or not an appeal is feasible in your case. If you have been granted an appeal as of right, we can meet to decide if we are the best law firm to handle your appeal.
As seasoned criminal defence lawyers, we have represented clients at all three levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. We work to help clients through their struggle with the legal system and will take on the challenge of trying to correct bad law when necessary.
